AAA Boys Individual Predictions
100 M 1. Jason McGill Martinsburg 2. Derrick Johnson Capital 3. Carleton Wilcox Jefferson 4. Marcus Gordon Wheeling Park 5. Theo Yates Jefferson 6. Chris Spencer Parkersburg South McGill suffered a minor hamstring injury at the regional meet that could provide Johnson the opening he needs to win the race.
200 M 1. Derrick Johnson Capital 2. Carleton Wilcox Jefferson 3. Jemmel Pursoo Cabell Midland 4. Eddie Whitehead South Charleston 5. Chris Spencer Parkersburg South 6. Justin Southall Ripley This should be a very tight race between the top 4.
400 M 1. Ben Shamblin Herbert Hoover 2. Tyrone Gilliard Princeton 3. Jason Walker Woodrow Wilson 4. Chuck McCoy Brooke 5. Robert Turner Nitro 6. Jemmel Pursoo Cabell Midland Shamblin should run away with the race, but Gilliard does have a 49.54 to his credit during the season. Two of our placers will be running in the "slow" heat which could hinder their chances.
800 M 1. Brent Garrett Capital 2. Seth Crislip George Washington 3. Brian Bergstrom Buckhannon-Upshur 4. Ben Shamblin Herbert Hoover 5. Kevin Batey Cabell Midland 6. Jason Walker Woodrow Wilson Garrett has edged Crislip in their last two head-to-head meetings. Bergstrom has run 1:58 and 1:57 at the state meet the last two years. Shamblin is the only one in our top 6 that hasn't run under two minutes yet, but he's also the most likely to pop off a 1:56.
1600 M 1. Brian Bergstrom Buckhannon-Upshur 2. Larry Atkins Huntington 3. Billy Shedd Parkersburg South 4. Matt Crumrine Wheeling Park 5. Kevin Batey Cabell Midland 6. Casey Brown Jefferson Those who run the 3200 Friday night might have a hard time competing with those who are fresh. Atkins and Batey fall into that category.
3200 M 1. Kevin Batey Cabell Midland 2. Ricky Moore Wheeling Park 3. Mikey Guinn St. Albans 4. Larry Atkins Huntington 5. Zach Beckett Cabell Midland 6. Keith Rand Morgantown Batey repeats as champion edging out cross country champion Moore.
110 HH 1. David Conley Buckhannon-Upshur 2. Jamar Dunnigan Woodrow Wilson 3. Johnny Hull Preston 4. Justin McDonie Cabell Midland 5. Daris Bandy Woodrow Wilson 6. Wenecio Godfrey Greenbrier East Conley is a solid favorite. Bandy is the dark-horse who could win it if he runs a flawless race.
300 IH 1. Prom Son Martinsburg 2. David Conley Buckhannon-Upshur 3. Justin McDonie Cabell Midland 4. Bryce Jarrell St. Albans 5. Ty Emrick Parkersburg South 6. Johnny Hull Preston Son and Conley are the only real threats to go under 40 seconds. However, this is a hurdle race, and last year's 300 Hurdles should tell you that anything can happen.
4x100 M 1. Capital 2. Martinsburg 3. Jefferson 4. South Charleston 5. Brooke 6. Hedgesville Capital is a strong favorite. McGill's injury could hinder Martinsburg again.
4x200 M 1. Capital 2. South Charleston 3. Martinsburg 4. Jefferson 5. Brooke 6. Parkersburg South Capital owns the best time, but South Charleston did beat them at Gazette's. Capital's win is not a given.
4x400 M 1. Capital 2. Brooke 3. Buckhannon-Upshur 4. Hedgesville 5. Nitro 6. Martinsburg Capital doesn't have the best time, but with two guys on their roster that run in the 51's, two others that run in the 41's in the 300 Hurdles, and another that goes 2:02 in the 800 (2:00 last year), you have to believe that they can run a hot 4X400.
4x800 M 1. Cabell Midland 2. Parkersburg South 3. Capital 4. Buckhannon-Upshur 5. Woodrow Wilson 6. Hedgesville Buckhannon-Upshur owns the best time in the state, but that time was run with David Conley on the team, and we don't think he'll be competing in this event at the state meet. Cabell Midland should run under 8:10 and win fairly handily.
Shuttle 1. Buckhannon-Upshur 2. Woodrow Wilson 3. Cabell Midland 4. Martinsburg 5. St. Albans 6. John Marshall Buchkhannon-Upshur and Woodrow Wilson own the only sub-58 times in the state. With McDonie and Pursoo, Cabell Midland is a threat.
L Jump 1. Hickory Dean Hedgesville 2. Luca Deluca Hedgesville 3. Eddie Logan Oak Hill 4. Teon Saunders South Charleston 5. Chad Merchant Fairmont Senior 6. Derrick Tolliver South Charleston Dean and Deluca should give Hedgesville a 1-2 sweep, but someone having an off day can drop them from the top of the list to not placing pretty quickly.
H Jump 1. Nathan Fields Elkins 2. Tony Giles Woodrow Wilson 3. Gabe Casdorph Nitro 4. Jason Beneker Nitro 5. Josh Hill St. Albans 6. Chris Taylor Parkersburg South Fields will not repeat his regional mistake. His injured ankle may prevent him from clearing 7'3 as he did last year, but he is still far and away the favorite.
Discus 1. Ben Frye Musselman 2. Chris White St. Albans 3. Chad Elschlager Parkersburg South 4. Jesse Wisnewski Nitro 5. Ryan Morris Woodrow Wilson 6. Erik Shuma Wheeling Park Frye and White are the only two to have topped 150' this year. Frye has a toss of over 160' to his credit. Elschlager is the most consistent. Morris and Shuma are very inconsistent but are capable of a huge throw.
Shot 1. Erik Shuma Wheeling Park 2. Sam Ames Wheeling Park 3. Chris Rogers Keyser 4. Chris White St. Albans 5. Sam McClung Greenbrier East 6. Brian Roach North Marion Shuma has a toss of 57' this year. He's clearly the favorite in this event.
P Vault 1. Matt Kotson John Marshall 2. Chris Creamer St. Albans 3. Arlan Sheets Hedgesville 4. James Shetler Hedgesville 5. Josh Brookover Parkersburg 6. Ryan Stocking Hedgesville Kotson has the only AAA 14' vault. Creamer predicted his own victory and a 14'6 vault.
