The lists you see today are an attempt by RunWV to create an all time best list for West Virginia Runners. They are the result of many hours of researching and compiling by RunWV with a big tip of the hat to Coach Jesse Skiles for allowing us to use his book for information (Click here for information on how to order his books). To create these lists, we had to make several rules and assumptions and to make comparisons. Here is a list of those rules and assumptions.

List Rules
1. These are for State Meet marks only. This allowed everyone to have an equal chance to attain a mark and we have nearly all the marks that have been attained at the state meet. Since we don't have every mark from every meet aside from the state meet, it would not have been fair to include those results since we would have meets for some teams and not for others.
2. Those times that were hand held were converted to accutrack times by adding .24 seconds to the hand held time. This is the amount of time added by the State Track Meet officials for seeding runners who received hand held times at the regionals. This addition to hand held times will make them much closer to what their accutrack time would have been and allows us to fairly compare runners timed under hand held and automated conditions.
3. If meet results listed only seconds or tenths of seconds for an event in a automated timing era, .99 or .09 was added. Thus if an 800M was timed at 2:13 with no other information given, the a 2:13.99 was assumed. If 2:13.7 was given then 2:13.79 was assumed. If no tenths were listed for the hand held timing era then .9 was added to the time prior to adding the .24 hand held time addition.
4. If a runner or team time was not listed, the worst possible time was assumed. Therefore if the second place time was not reported on our records and the third place time as 2:17.89, then the second place runner was given a time of 2:17.88.
5. All times have been converted to the current equivalent. This means that a 2 mile time has been converted to the equivalent 3200 meter time so that athletes from both eras can be fairly measured.
6. From 1960 onward, athletes and relay teams have been moved to the classes that they would have participated in had there been three divisions at the time of their event. Due to the lack of clear records, prior to 1960, all athletes were considered one class.
7. For most years prior to 1971, only first place times/marks were typically recorded. If we receive additional official results from those years, we will update the lists.

Team Scoring Assumptions
1. The main scoring lists are kept in "inclusive" order. Inclusive means that a runner or team who managed to run well enough to make the all time or decade lists multiple times can score more than once per event. Example, if a runner had the 2nd and 3rd best all time marks for an event, they would be listed twice and their team would score 14 points.
2. "Exclusive" scores are listed to the left of each total in (). Exclusive means that each runner or team may only score once per event. Using the example above, the runner would only be listed once and score only 8 for their team.

Finally, there is also the possibility of human error. Our statistics will only be as good as the records we have been able to accumulate. In many cases, we have cross referenced times across multiple sources in an effort to provide the most accurate lists. However, if an inaccurate time was recorded or reported to multiple newspapers, it's likely we will report the same error. If a wrong time or mark was recorded 15 years ago, we'll likely not catch the error now. Additionally, we will be entering over 44,000 record fields into our data base so it is very possible that our fingers will slip at least a few times. If you see an error (time, distance, name, school, year, etc.) or can fill in any of our blanks, please email us at runwv@runwv.com.
