The following article was forwarded to me, and I felt I should share it. Devin Reid ran for Newark Catholic High School in Ohio. Newark Catholic competes most years at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational.
NEWARK — The Sentinel has confirmed Devin Reid died while battling leukemia Monday afternoon at Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
Reid, a 2007 Newark Catholic graduate, was diagnosed with leukemia while fighting rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer diagnosed in September 2005 during his senior year at Newark Catholic.
Reid eventually beat rhabdomyosarcoma, but the destruction done to his immune system was too much to fight the leukemia. He died of a virus contracted recently during his continuing fight with leukemia.
Late in 2008, Reid, who is survived by his parents, Larry and Becky, and sisters, Alison and Mcki, took a turn for the worse and returned to the area from New York this fall. He watched younger sister Mcki participate in her first year of cross country and took a family vacation to the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
Reid and his family returned to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in November for an attempt at experimental treatment involving Alison’s donation of her T cells. The family came back to Ohio for December. Reid spent his last Christmas at home while taking frequent trips to Licking Memorial Hospital and Children’s Hospital for platelets and blood.
Reid’s final cross country season in 2005 was cut short by the rhabdomyosarcoma. He spent most of the next 10 months and more time during the past three years at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City while undergoing treatments at Sloan-Kettering.
By January 2007, Reid was able to return to NC to complete his final semester of schoolwork. Despite not being near the elite level he was before his illness, Reid participated for the Green Wave track team and competed in the Division III district meet in May before graduating in June with many of his 2006 classmates in attendance.
Reid was unable to attend Rio Grande University as he had previously hoped, but he did serve as a volunteer cross country coach for NC in 2007.
