Sebastian Gerard Spencer (born November 14) is a standout sprinter at Weir Senior High School in the town of Weirton, West Virginia. It was established in 1916. Today, Weir High School is home to roughly 640 students in grades 9 through 12. It is a part of the Hancock County school district.

Spencer is a Gatorade State High School Player of the Year for West Virginia boys track. A three-time state champion in 2018, winning the 4x100 and 4x200 titles as well as the 200 meters with a school and state record). A four-time state champion in 2019, defending his 4x100 and 4x200 titles, winning the 100 meters and 200 meters with state and school records in both events.

Spencer gained national attention during the 2019 West Virginia state meet for his wild comeback in the final leg of the 4x100 meter relay which was featured on FloTrack and YouTube. With a blown hand-off dropped Weir back to 6th or 7th place. Sebastian Spencer started his anchor leg in 6th place and ran his team all the way up to the title, giving the foursome of Andrew LeMasters, Quincy Dameron, Jake McCoy, and Sebastian Spencer the win in 43.89. Spencer’s head track coach at Weir High School was Tom Taylor. He was also coached by Terrence Montgomery of the Eastern Ohio Speed and Agility Academy in Toronto, Ohio.

In addition to his track accomplishments, he was honored twice as a first team all-state selection at defensive back in football.

Spencer maintained a weighted 4.0 GPA in the classroom and is a member of the National Honor Society.

After receiving multiple college offers in football and track, Spencer signed a national letter of intent to compete on an athletic scholarship at the University of North Carolina.

His parents are Gerard and Franki Spencer. He has two siblings, brothers Donavan and Bryant.

 

High School (2017-2020):

 

[Freshman Year]

On May 19th-20th, 2017, at the West Virginia high school boy’s state track meet at Laidley Field in Charleston, Spencer placed 6th in the 100 meters (11.31), 3rd in the 200 meters (22.99) and ran leadoff leg for The Red Riders in the 4x200 meter relay (1:35.56) for a 7th place finish in the Class AA boys division. His older brother Donavan ran a class AA state meet record in the 100 meters (10.70), won the 200-meters (22.20), ran anchor leg on the 4x200-meter relay, and tied for 2nd in high point honors with 20 points, while leading his team to an 8th place team finish with 33 points.

 

[Sophomore Year]

On May 18th-19th, 2018, at the West Virginia high school class AA boy’s state track meet at Laidley Field in Charleston, Spencer placed 2nd in the 100 meters (11.27) and tied the state meet record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.61, which had been held by Dunbar’s Eric Knapper since 1985. In addition, he anchored The Red Riders winning 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay squads with times of 44.01 and 1:30, respectively. Spencer was 3rd in high point honors with 23 points, while leading his team to 3rd place team finish with 63 points.

 

[Junior Year]

On May 17th-18th, 2019, at the West Virginia high school class AA boy’s state track meet at Laidley Field in Charleston, Spencer set two meet records in the 100 meters (10.60) and the 200 meters (21.61 – Tied). He anchored The Red Riders winning 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay squads with times of 43.89 and 1:30.43, respectively. Spencer was 4th in high point honors with 25 points, while leading his team to 3rd place team finish with 52.33 points.

 

[Senior Year]

During the indoor season, he qualified to the New Balance Nationals indoor meet in New York. Unfortunately, Spencer received the news the meet was canceled.

On April 21st, 2020, there was a declaration by Governor Jim Justice that students would not be returning to the classroom for the spring, then there was the subsequent inevitable declaration by the WVSSAC that there would be no 2020 Track Season due to the coronavirus (covid-19).

On June 29th, 2020, in its 35th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company announced Sabastian Spencer of Weir High School as its 2019-20 Gatorade West Virginia Boy’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Spencer is the first Gatorade West Virginia Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Weir High School.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior concluded his prep track career with seven state championships and the state record in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 10.50 seconds. Spencer was unbeaten in the 100- and 200-meter dash during the 2019 outdoor season and set 12 meet and stadium records as a junior. A four-sport athlete who competed in both track and baseball during the spring, Spencer set meet records in the 100 and 200 at the 2019 Class AA outdoor state championships, eclipsing standards previously held by his brother and, prior to that, his father.
