Brandon Doughty (born May 5, 1993) grew up in Shepherdstown, which is a town in
Jefferson County, West Virginia, in the United States, located in the lower
Shenandoah Valley along the Potomac River. He is a 2011 graduate of
Jefferson High School, where
he won multiple state championships and one incredible runner-up finish seen
all over the internet (youtube, flotrack,
ect.).
Doughty
is known for being an all-out gutsy racer.
He
went on to Oklahoma where he graduated in 2016 as one of the most decorated
runners in school history. He was a 3-time NCAA All-American and 4-time Big 12
Conference Champion during his tenure as a Sooner, including 4th and 5th place
finishes at the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Upon
graduation from Oklahoma, Doughty has been pursuing a professional running
career for Zap Endurance - On Running.
He is the son of Lucia Doughty.
Brandon has two siblings, brother Austin and sister
Bryanna.
Early Years:
He first started running in the 6th
grade for his middle school team. He was good at it at first and only liked the
competitive aspect of it for a while. As a youngster, he tried out most sports,
but basketball and soccer were the ones he enjoyed most of all.
Middle School:
Doughty attended Shepherdstown Middle
School from the fall of 2004 to the spring of 2007. He first began running
track and cross country in the 6th grade under the direction of Coach Morgan.
“He was the best middle school coach
I could have ever asked for. His knowledge about the sport and dedication to us
was one of the main reasons I stuck with running,” said Doughty.
High School:
Brandon Doughty attended Jefferson
High School from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2011. His high school
coaches were Scott Biola (now at Elkins) for cross country and Coach Hunter for
track. Both were fantastic coaches with extremely high levels of success in
their coaching.
Doughty truly enjoyed cross country
and the team aspect, but his heart’s desire has always been on the track. His
favorite workout in high school was mile repeats. While in
high school he would average anywhere from 25-50 miles per week.
During his high school career,
Doughty was a four-time all-state runner in cross country and a 12-time
all-state runner in track. He won the individual state cross country
championship as a junior and he led his Cougars’ cross country team to three
runner-up finishes. He also led his high school track team to back-to-back
state championships his junior and senior years and to a runner-up finish as a
sophomore. As a junior, he won the 1,600-meter run and was the high point award
winner for Class AAA Boys at the State Track Meet. He also ran a leg on
Jefferson’s state winning 4x400-meter relay team as a senior.
Freshman Year:
At the 2007 West Virginia Class AAA
Boys State Cross Country Meet at Cabell Midland HS in Ona (WV), Ryan Beabout
easily repeated his title from the year before, taking the win by over 20
seconds. He started pulling away near the mile marker and increased his lead
steadily over the remainder of the course. Beabout’s
time of 16:14 set a new course record.
Brandon
Doughty used a strong last mile and a furious finish to take the final
All-State Spot, just squeezing past teammate Cory Hampshire in the last few
meters. Jefferson would finish 3rd overall as a team.

title and repeat as champion. Individually, Morgantown's Cody Pelliccioni took over about half way into the race and
gradually pulled away for a convincing and impressive victory, while just
missing the course record by 4 seconds.

and ran second leg on the Cougars’ 3rd place 4x400-meter relay team (3:26.60).
Junior Year:
At
the 2009 West Virginia Class AAA Boys State Cross Country Meet at Cabell
Midland High School in Ona, the race was ran in a
steady rain and muddy conditions. This was the most anticipated race from a
spectator standpoint. In the team race, it was expected to be a shootout
between Cabell Midland and Fairmont Senior. Individually, Morgantown's Cody Pelliccioni came in as the favorite with only Jefferson's
Brandon Doughty and Fairmont Senior's Dayton McVicker
seen as potential threats. The shootout didn't happen. Cabell Midland placed 7
in ahead of Fairmont Senior's 3rd runner. What was expected to be a tight
battle became a 45-point slaughter. Fairmont Senior was not helped by having
one of their front five battling illness, but it
wouldn't have mattered. Cabell Midland was too strong on this day to be caught.
Individually, it was Brandon Doughty pulling away in the last mile to take the
convincing win, while leading his Cougars’ to a runner-up finish as a team.
Team Results: 1) Cabell Midland - 37;
2) Jefferson - 82; 3) Fairmont Senior - 106; 4) Preston - 113; 5) Winfield -

In
the postseason, Doughty placed 141st in the seeded boy’s 3.1-mile race at the
Foot Locker South Regional at McAlpine Greenway Park
in Charlotte (NC), crossing the line in 16:26.00.
At
the 2010 West Virginia High School Class AAA Boys State Track Meet at Laidley Field, the 1600 Meter Run was one of the highlight
events of the weekend. The field went out very fast with Cabell Midland's Jacob
Burcham leading the way in 1:02. Jefferson's Brandon
Doughty and Morgantown's Cody Pelliccioni were right
on his heels. At the end of two laps, Pelliccioni had
moved to the front, crossing in 2:09. Burcham and
Doughty followed in 2:10 and 2:11. Then, the race began. Burcham
took the lead in lap 3 with a 61 second lap, coming through in 3:11. Pelliccioni crossed in 3:12, and
Doughty in 3:13. On the final lap, Doughty proved to have the strongest kick.
He closed out in less than 61 seconds to take the win in 4:14.30. He ran the
final two laps in 2:01. Doughty's 4:14.30 still
stands as a Top 10 All-Time State Meet Performance. Doughty also placed third
in both the 800-meter run (1:56.66) and 3,200-meter run (9:23.20), and ran
anchor leg on the Cougars’ 2nd place 4x800-meter relay team (8:08.99). Doughty
earned high point honors with 24 points.
Senior Year:
At
the 2010 West Virginia Class AAA Boys State Cross Country Meet at Cabell
Midland High School in Ona, the team race was expected to be a bit of a
shootout between Cabell Midland and Jefferson, but Cabell Midland dominated
from start to finish, placing four runners in the top 10 and their front five
in the top 14. Individually, a titanic battle was expected between the Four
Horsemen: Fairmont Senior's Dayton McVicker, Cabell
Midland's Jacob Burcham, Morgantown's Cody Pelliccioni, and Jefferson's Brandon Doughty. Three out of
the four would end their high school careers as state cross country champions,
while the other was a 3200-meter state champion in track. These guys did not
disappoint as three of them absolutely crushed the course record. In the end,
it was Jacob Burcham pulling away from Cody Pelliccioni late to take the 8 second win in an absolutely
stellar 15:12. Brandon Doughty easily held the 4th spot in 15:56, while leading
his Cougars’ to a runner-up finish as a team.
Team Results: 1) Cabell Midland - 35;
2) Jefferson - 60; 3) Preston - 108; 4) Fairmont Senior - 118; 5) Huntington -
143; 6) Hampshire - 169; 7) Parkersburg - 180; 8) University - 184; 9) Musselman - 212; 10) George Washington - 249; 11) Elkins -
292; 12) Greenbrier East - 334; 13) Nicholas County - 367
Top 10 All-State Individual’s: 1) Jacob Burcham, Cabell Midland (15:13); 2) Cody Pelliccioni, Morgantown (15:20); 3) Dayton McVicker, Fairmont Senior (15:30); 4) Brandon Doughty,
Jefferson (15:56); 5) Brody Born, Preston (16:19); 6) Tyler Salmons, Cabell
Midland (16:22); 7) Eric Graf, Jefferson (16:23); 8) Jeremy Waugh, Cabell
Midland (16:32); 9) Jordan Brown-Stobbe, University
(16:33); 10) Ryan Smith, Cabell Midland (16:33)
In
the postseason, Doughty placed 21st in the seeded boy’s 3.1-mile race at the
Foot Locker South Regional at McAlpine Greenway Park
in Charlotte (NC), crossing the line in 15:23.00.
At
the 2011 West Virginia High School Class AAA Boys State Track Meet at Laidley Field, Cabell Midland High School sophomore Jacob Burcham completed a sick triple crown at the West Virginia
State Championships. The youngster set two state records in the 1600- and
800-meter runs with times of 4:08.80 and 1:54.01 respectively on Saturday. The
previous night, Jacob Burcham won the 3200-meter run
in a time of 9:11.29 with splits of 4:48-4:23 and a last 1200 of 3:06
(65-62-59...splits courtesy of Ricky Quintana).
What
was great about these races is that Burcham had to
battle Jefferson senior Brandon Doughty in each.
Of
the three distance races between Burcham and Doughty,
the one that will forever be etched in the back of our memory will be the
800-meter run, because of the superman dive.
“With
100 meters left I realized that I could catch him so I was going as hard as I
could, and at the 50 mark I was almost there. But he hit another gear so I had
to go even faster and I had absolutely nothing left, but somehow I started
catching up again and with 20 meters left I knew I wasn't gonna
catch him. So I decided I was gonna dive, but he had
me by so much I really had to lay out for it if I was gonna
beat him ... and I came up short,” said Doughty.

In
his final track season at Jefferson, Doughty ran 1:54.03 (state record time),
4:12.90 (state record time) and 9:20.23...none of which were good for the win.
The only redemption Doughty got was in the 4x400 relays when Jefferson and
Midland went at it, Jefferson ended up with the title 3:23.00 to 3:25.29.
