Andrew Benford Biography

Ravenswood High (Class of 2006) / University of Richmond (Class of 2011)

In the words of Andrew Benford…

I always dreamed of growing up and playing baseball for the Cincinnati Reds.  My favorite player was Barry Larkin and I figured I’d make a nice replacement for him at shortstop when he decided to retire.  I held on to this dream throughout the Little League years, but it started to fade after I endured two straight win-less seasons of Junior League (yes, my team failed to win a single game for two years).  If nothing else, this made me realize that losing really sucked and I didn’t want to do that anymore.  In the meantime, my older brother, Adam, had decided to go out for the middle school cross country team instead of sticking with soccer.  This was big news!  We’d been playing organized soccer since we were about 6 years old, and I didn’t even know what the hell cross country was.  As it turned out, Adam’s decision to run cross country that season would forever change the course of my life.

By the time Adam entered high school, it was clear that he was a natural.  His stride was fluid and effortless.  I didn’t know who Pre was at the time, but watching Adam win races and break records was all the inspiration I needed.  Much like Pre, he made running look cool.  Plus, like many annoying copycat little brothers, I figured: If he can do it, why not me?  My brother and I would go on to contribute to the first six of nine consecutive West Virginia State Cross Country Team Championships at Ravenswood High School, as well as garner several individual state titles on the track.  One of my favorite running memories was finishing 1-2 with Adam at the State Cross Country Meet his senior year (he won).  I still love the Cincinnati Reds, but I think I probably made the right call on letting that one go, even though they made the playoffs this year.

Competing in Division I athletics had always been another dream of mine, and luckily running afforded me the means to chase that dream (no pun intended).  I went on to attend the University of Richmond where I trained under fellow West Virginian, Steve Taylor.  Coach Taylor grew up in the small town of St. Marys, WV, about 45 miles north of me on the Ohio River.  I wasn’t very heavily recruited out of high school, but Steve had watched me compete at the WV State Track Meet every year, and I had attended his running camps every summer in the mountains of West Virginia.  It was here that I discovered my passion and talent for climbing and descending the mountain trails with reckless abandon.  Coach Taylor took note, and would go on to coach me to two U.S. Mountain Running Teams.  I took 12th at the World Junior Mountain Running Championships in Turkey at the age of 19, and then 13th a few years later in Senior Men’s division at the World Championships in Italy.

Mountain running aside, success did not come easily or quickly at Richmond; it took me a couple of years to get the hang of things and adapt to the increase in both training volume and intensity. However, by the end of my five years at Richmond, I had helped lead our cross country team to the first NCAA Championship berth in program history, nabbed an individual conference title in cross country, and was a 2nd team All-American steeplechaser on the track.  While I learned a lot about myself in those five years, both as an athlete and a person, the single most important thing I learned came from a fall suffered during my final collegiate race as a Spider.  Interestingly enough, it was getting back up that brought me to Rogue AC…

As I rounded the final turn and headed for home, I had all but secured a 4th place finish in my 3000m Steeplechase Semi-Final at the 2011 NCAA Championships.  Approaching the final barrier of the race all I had to do was clear it and I would move on.  I jumped, but my lead leg clipped the hurdle, causing my trail leg to crash hard into the barrier, throwing me face-first onto the track.  With only 75 meters separating me from a spot in the Final, I picked myself up and pushed with everything I had toward the finish. The top 8 in my heat would advance on to the Final. I finished 9th, missing the last spot by .11 seconds, thus putting an end to my collegiate running career.  To say that I was devastated would be the understatement of the century.  However, what I didn’t know at the time was that Rogue AC coach, Steve Sisson, happened to be watching from the stands.  He would later tell me that from the moment I got up from that fall, he knew he wanted to coach me.
