Riggs, Walker win McCoy Awards

Morgantown's Irene Riggs has been named the McCoy Award winner as the top Female Track & Field athlete of 2021 for West Virginia. She won the 800, 1600, and 3200 Meter Runs at the 2021 State meet and ran on Morgantown's 3rd place 4x400 Meter Relay team. She was the high point scorer for the meet, helping Morgantown to a runner-up finish. She had the top times in the State in the 1600 and 3200. In the 1600, she joined the short list of West Virginia females to go under 5:00.

Wheeling Park's Torrence Walker has been named the McCoy Award winner as the top Male Track & Field athlete of 2021 for West Virginia. He won the 100, 200, and 400 Meter Dashes at the 2021 State Meet. He set a State Meet record in the preliminary round in the 100 Meter Dash and just missed the State Meet Record in the finals of the 200. He was the high point scorer for the meet, helping Wheeling Park to a runner-up finish. He had the top times in the State in the 100, 200, and 400 Meter Dashes and was on the 4x100 Meter Relay with the top time and 4x200 and 4x400 Meter Relays that had the 2nd best times. During the season, he set a new West Virginia All-Time Best mark in the 100 Meter Dash at the Dick Deit Track Classic with a 10.43. He matched that time at the AAU Junior Olympics in the post-season. He also set a new West Virginia All-Time best mark in the 200 Meter Dash at the AAU Junior Olympics with a 20.91, making him the first West Virginia High School athlete to go under 21 seconds.
