Morgantown's Irene Riggs was named the 2022 Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year for West Virginia, making her a repeat winner from last year. This follows her stellar 2022 Track Campaign that saw her post the top times in the State in the 800, 1600, and 3200 Meter Runs while winning the State Meet in all 3. She set a State Meet Record in the 3200 Meter Run. During the season, she set a State All-Time Best in the 3200 in a mid-season meet, only to break that record in the post-season at the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational, where she covered the true 2 Mile in 9:50.72. That gave her the 2nd fastest Outdoor True 2 Mile ever ran by a High School Girl in United States History. She also knocked on the door of the best ever 1600 in a post-season race by clocking a 4:37.18. She also anchored the 4x800 Unit that crushed the State All-Time best at the Penn Relays with a 9:18.17.
