Jocelyn Johnson, Gus Lambert Qualify For
USATF JR Olympic Nationals
On Thursday through Sunday, July 6-9th, the USA Track
& Field (USATF) Region 5 Championship was held on the campus of Cedarville
University in Cedarville, OH. Featuring athletes from West Virginia, Kentucky,
Michigan, and Ohio, it serves as the qualifying meet for the USATF Hershey National
Jr Olympic Track & Field Championships. Over the weekend we thrilled to
have two of our athletes qualify for the national championships by virtue of placing
Top-5 in their events. Jocelyn Johnson (Huntington Middle/Huntington, WV) qualified
in both the Midget (11-12) Girls Aero Javelin placing third with a new personal
best of 12.48m, an improvement of almost 3 meters from her previous best, and Shot
Put where she finished 5th with a new personal best of 6.36 meters.
Also qualifying in two event's was Gus Lambert (Spring Hill
Elementary/Huntington, WV), who placed 4th in the Bantam (9-10) Boys
Mini-Javelin with a mark of 8.49 meters, and 5th in the Shot Put
with a mark of 4.56 meters. This marks the first time qualifying for Nationals for
both Jocelyn and Gus.
Also recording top-8 finishes and scoring in the Region were
Stephen Jones (Spring Hill Elementary/Huntington, WV) who finished 7th
in the Midget Boys Long Jump, and Ayrazzelia Meade (Cabell-Midland/Huntington,
WV) who placed 7th in both the Youth (13-14) Girls Discus and Shot
Put.
Our next meet will be the USATF
Hershey National Jr Olympic Track and Field Championships being held July 24-30th
at Rock Chalk Park on the campus of Kansas University in Lawrence, KS. Kansas University
is the alma mater of US track & Field legends and Olympians Jim Ryun and
Wes Santee.
