It appears that the WVSSAC is filling out the open spots created by those Regions that were unable to fill their three guaranteed posistions. I recall hearing once upon a time that this was possible, but I don't recall ever hearing that it had been a successful proposal. Either I had never been told that this had passed, or I had been told and simply forgot. The two are about equally likely.
There were only three cases of this for this year. In Class AA, Region IV did not fill their Shuttle Hurdle Relay spots. In Class A, Region III did not fill their 4x800 Meter Relay spots and did not have anyone run the 3200 Meter Run, leaving three open spots in that.
An additional requirement to gain one of these spots is that you had to finish in the top 7 in your Region.
The athletes/teams that gained these positions are as follows:
Class AA Shuttle Hurdle Relay - Braxton County 1:17.43
Class A 4x800 Meter Relay - Bishop Donahue 13:11.72
Class A 3200 Meter Run - Amy Farr, Williamstown 14:14.73
Class A 3200 Meter Run - Meggie Swisher, Doddridge 15:17.92
Class A 3200 Meter Run - Kim Snider, Pendleton 15:37.49
The "Top 7" requirement kept Williamstown's Stacia Sandy and Charleston Catholic's Catherine Higgins from replacing Meggie Swisher and Kim Snider for these spots. It seems unfair, but I suppose the WVSSAC wants to make sure that one Region doesn't carry too many positions. To me, if the 16 best kids are all from the same Region, that's who should go.
