Meet: AAA Girls State Meet Location: Williamstown, WV Date: October 30, 1999
The first event of the day brought great team competition and individual excitement. By the 1/4 mile mark, defending champion Jennifer Davis and her sister, pre-race favorite Susan Davis had sprinted out to the early lead. By the time the runners reached the mile marker, Susan Davis had established a six second lead over second place Holly Hunter and eight seconds over third place Jennifer Davis. Susan Davis covered the first mile in a blazing 5:43. Stephanie Hatfield, Ryann Metheny, and Rachel Carden rounded out the early top five. By the two-mile mark, Hunter had reeled in Davis, and the two were running side-by-side as they crossed the marker at the 11:51 mark. Jennifer Davis held on to the third spot at 12:06 with Ryann Metheny and Giti Farudi vying for the fourth spot at 12:18. Holly Hunter used a strong finishing kick over the last 200 meters to pull out the three second victory and claim her third state title in four years. Susan and Jennifer Davis maintained second and third place at the finish line. Ryann Metheny and Giti Farudi raced each other to fourth and fifth place, respectively. The All-State team was rounded out by Maria Stover, Rachel Carden, Sarah Corley, Stephanie Haftield, and Lori Burton. On the team side of things, East Fairmont barely edged past Fairmont Senior to take home the state title. East won the meet by a single point. We want to give special mention to our MVP of the race. The MVP is not necessarily the person who ran the fastest, but is the person whose finishing position contributed most to her team's finish. The Girls AAA MVP is East Fairmont's Johnna Sacchetti. Johnna finished 37th in the meet, which was ten places higher than predicted, but more importantly, she finished 9 team places higher than predicted. Since Fairmont Senior's girls had run better than predicted, East needed someone on their roster to make a major move up the rankings, and Sacchetti accomplished that.

So, how did we do on our predictions. Well, we called for a close team championship, and we certainly got it. East Fairmont nipped their cross-town rival by a single point to claim the state championship. We had pegged Susan Davis to nip Holly Hunter, but it went the other way. Other than that, our picks for the AAA girls went exceptionally well. Our first nine were the first nine. Fourteen of the girls we picked to finish in the top fifteen did so. The young lady who jumped into the top fifteen to mess us up was Celia Miller of Morgantown, who we had picked to finish sixteenth. Twenty-two of our predicted top twenty-five placed in the actual top twenty-five. Congratulations to Kayla Wolfe, Rachel Fox, and Lanie Lord for moving into those spots (we had picked them 29th, 28th, and 30th). So, who really surprised us? None other than Preston Freshman SeeGee Kisner, who raced to a 35th finishing place after being picked 60th, a simple 25 place improvement. Congratulations SeeGee.
