Meet: A-AA Boys State Meet Location: Williamstown, WV Date: October 31, 1998 The first race of the day saw three runners from Sissonville and defending champion Josh Watson bolting out at the start to evade the traffic of 62 runners trying to converge into an 8 foot alley way. As the runners reached the half- mile mark, Adam Cross of Sissonville had pulled into the lead followed by Josh Watson and Nathan Gates of Frankfort. Not much changed in the next half mile as Cross, Watson, and Gates were still the top three runners at the mile mark. They were followed Jody Morgan of Sissonville, West Garrett of East Hardy, and Shaun Spielman of Berkeley Springs. By the time the runners came around the bend into view of the two-mile marker, Watson had taken control of the race, building an 8 second lead on Gates. Watson came through at 10:15 and Gates at 10:23. Following were Cross at 10:28, Garrett at 10:32, Spielman at 10:37, Denny Hayes of Doddridge at 10:42, and Jody Morgan at 10:44. Josh Watson easily maintained control throughout the remainder of the race and broke the tape with an outstanding time of 16:08. The victory made the Magnolia Senior a 3-time State Champion in Cross Country. Adam Cross used a strong last mile to overcome Gates and finish second in 16:29. Nathan Gates held onto third with a time of 16:39. Denny Hayes also ran very strong in the last mile, cutting the distance between he and Gates from 17 seconds to 2 seconds, finishing in 16:41. West Garrett rounded out the top 5 with a time of 16:52. Completing the all-state team was Shaun Spielman in sixth place with a time of 17:01, Jody Morgan in seventh in 17:08, Ryan Parsons of Williamstown in eighth in 17:13, Aaron Phillips of PikeView in ninth in 17:16, and Cole Carpenter of Ritchie in tenth in 17:22. Of the top 5, only Cross and Hayes return next season. In the team competition Doddrige County outdistance Sissonville by a score of 63 to 76. Charleston Catholic was a close third with 83 points. How did RunWV.com do on our predictions? We got the individual winner right and the team winner right. Second and third place teams switched places on us. Of our predicted top fifteen, thirteen placed in that range. John Feddock (12th) of Shady Spring and Patrick Anderson (14th) of Berkeley Springs were the two who took us by surprise. To be honest, they had been picked to finish 28th and 29th, respectively. Congratulations guys. On a note for the future, the top Freshman finisher was Josh Sheets of Doddridge in 20th place.
