Meet: AAA Girls State Meet
Location:	Williamstown, WV
Date: October 31, 1998

The final event of the day began with some bad news. One of the pre-
race favorites, Susan Davis of Hampshire, would not be competing due
to an injury sustained at the regional meet. Sprinting out to the
early lead at the gun was Jennifer Davis of Hampshire, Nikki Moore of
Wheeling Park, and Giti Farudi of University. By the half-mile mark,
the only two RunWV.com felt had a chance to win the race (with Susan
Davis out) had taken over the top two spots. Jennifer Davis was leading
and Hunter was in second. Moore was holding the third position and
was followed by Farudi and Jefferson's Michell VanHorn. At the mile
marker, Hunter had opened a four second lead on Davis by blasting
through the first mile in 5:30 to Davis' 5:34. VanHorn had pulled into
third place and was followed now by Ryann Metheny of Elkins and Sarah
Corley of Fairmont Senior. The two-mile mark saw Davis close the gap
on Hunter to two seconds. Hunter came through in 11:39 and Davis in
11:41. Metheny had taken the third position away during the second mile
and crossed the marker at 12:10. Elkins' Zaia Wharton had moved into
fourth place and Sarah Corley remained in fifth. The last mile of the
race belonged to Jennifer Davis of Hampshire as she passed East Fairmont's
Holly Hunter and easily outdistanced her to the finish line. Davis
finished in 18:39 to Hunters' 18:58. Ryann Metheny of Elkins held on
for third with a time of 19:30. Zaia Wharton, also of Elkins, main-
tained her fourth position with a time of 19:40 and was followed
closely by Sarah Corley of Fairmont Senior in fifth with a time of 19:45.
Rounding out the All-State team were George Washington's Katherine
Gorrell in sixth with a time of 19:48, Lisa Sappey of Hedgesville in
seventh with a time of 19:49, Michelle VanHorn of Jefferson in eighth
with a time of 19:53, Amanda Hall of Fairmont Senior in ninth with a
time of 19:53, and Morgantown's Stephanie Meleadey in tenth with a time
of 20:07.

In the team event, Fairmont Senior's depth proved too much for challenger
Elkins with Fairmont winning by a score of 56 to 66. Cabell Midland
claimed the third position with 80 points.

How did RunWV.com do with our predictions? We again picked the team
champion correctly, but had our perfect day taken away when Jennifer
Davis took the individual title. Hey, seven out of eight isn't too
shabby, though. Of the fifteen girls we picked to be the top finishers,
fourteen of them did finish in the actual top fifteen, and the only
error was Susan Davis who didn't run. Our surprise runner that moved
into the top fifteen was Cabell Midland's Amanda Terry who we had
picked to finish 16th. While this race provided us with our only
champion error, it was easily the one we predicted best. The biggest
jump when comparing predicted place to actual finish was George
Washington's Lanie Lord who finished 21st after being predicted to
finish 35th.
