Maysen Fletcher Named West Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year

Herbert Hoover's Maysen Fletcher has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Cross Country in West Virginia.

Maysen Fletcher shook off a couple early season defeats to last year's Player of the Year, Alyssa Sauro, and used them as a learning experience as she avenged those losses at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational and then in a fantastic battle at the State Meet where the two battled within a stride of each other for nearly 3 miles before any separation was generated, and Fletcher held off a late push by Sauro to win by under 2 seconds.

Fletcher opened the season with a stellar 17:22 at the Autumn Classic in St. Marys and clocked a 17:35 at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in early September. She then clocked a 17:51 at the Great American XC Festival at Cary, NC, home of Nike Southeast, good for 10th place in that race, and also went under 18:00 at the Region IV Championships before taking the State Title in 18:17.

Fletcher continued her excellence into the post-season with a 3rd place finish at the Garmin RunningLane Championships on the lightning fast John Hunt Running Park course, touring the course in 16:59.10, and exceedingly rare sub-17 time for a West Virginia High School runner.
