Winfield's Brayden Marshall has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Cross Country in West Virginia.
It was not a season without some trials for Marshall, but he overcame his obstacles to easily repeat as the Class AA Champion by a whopping 45 seconds while leading Winfield to a dominant win in the team standings. During the regular season, he clocked in under 15:00 at the Autumn Classic, the Dutch Miller Invitational, and in 14:51 for a 6th place finish at the Great American XC Festival.
In the post-season, a 17th place finish at Nike Southeast did not deter Marshall. He spent a week getting healthy, and rebounded with an 8th place finish at the Footlocker South Regional with a 14:58 to qualify for Footlocker Nationals.
At Footlocker Nationals, Marshall had an exceptional race that culminated in a 5th place finish on the challenging course at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA. Working his way up through the field in the early stages of the race, Marshall spent a fair amount of time in 2nd place in the event. It was a great finish to a great season.
Marshall's case for Gatorade Player of the Year was bolstered by his exceptional academic record and frequent community service.
