Morgantown's Irene Riggs traveled to Richmond, VA to compete in the USATF National Championships, and once again, she came out with a win, earning a trip to Australia to represent Team USA in the USATF World Championships.
Riggs hung with the lead pack through the first 4 kilometers, sitting in 3rd place at 1K, 3rd place at 2K, 2nd place at 3K, and taking the lead by the 4K mark. At this point, there were still 6 within 1.2 seconds at the lead. Between 4K and 5K, Riggs and Ellie Shea (runner-up at the Champs Nationals) started pulling away from the field, getting 6 seconds away from the rest. Riggs led through the 5K at 16:40.7 with Shea just 1.4 seconds behind. The pair would absolutely hammer the last kilometer with both carrying a sub-5:00 pace through the kilometer. It was Riggs who proved stronger, taking the win by 3 seconds. Riggs completed the 6K course in 19:45.0 with Shea at 19:48.0. No one else was under 20:05.
