2023 WVSSAC AA Cross Country Championships 10/24 Analysis and Prediction @ Cabell (Diff: 1.0000) With 5 guys projected in the top 9, Winfield is showing levels of dominance reminiscent of the Riggs-led Morgantown girls' teams of the past few years. They should have no problem running away with the team title. The battle for 2nd could be more interesting. Frankfort comes in heavily favored, but Elkins is likely getting undershot by the program due to the fact that they didn't need to run particularly hard to win their region. Using their conference times as a reference, many of them could easily vault up by 15-30 seconds. Based on this alone, they could potentially cut over 20 points collectively, bringing Frankfort's lead into single digits. In other words, 1st place is pretty well under wraps. Even with a surprise upset, the individual title would still likely fall into Winfield hands, as his teammates Justin Lipscomb and Landon Brumfield have good control of 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Hughes gets the 4th spot and has some performances on record that show he can compete with Brumfield. However, he had a shaky regional meet where he lost to 5th ranked runner Nathaniel Stuck by 12 seconds. Landon Jones, riding a surprise regional victory where he defeated both Hughes and Stuck could also swipe the 4th spot with a similar performance. Following in his brother's footsteps, Trace Marshall comes into the state meet riding a strong freshman campaign and is slated to get 7th. He's followed closely by Josiah Brannen and Lincoln Haynes who narrowly posted better regional performances than Marshall, meaning the 7 through 9 spots could easily shuffle. Joshua Bodkins gets the 10th spot, but has ran times that, when converted, could easily justify a placement 3-4 spots higher. Darius Gray, despite being projected 11 seconds outside of the top 10, had a very strong conference race, and a similar performance could easily put him in contention with the 7th-9th pack. Gavin McDonald, Trevor George, and Luca Altobello are in similar boats, where they each have had single performances that could justify a run for the top 10. *Runners marked "Top10 Contndr" have a performance on record from the past month that, when converted to the State Meet course, would place them in the top 10.
