History:
The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are a series of annual cross country running races held in various regions of the United States to determine the premier cross country runner in various age groups, but mainly serves to find the best prep (high school) cross country athlete in the country. The FLCCC were previously known as the Kinney Cross Country Championships, which was started by Woolworth's Kinney Shoes division in 1979 in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. Finally, in 1993, this elite series of cross country races became known as the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, as it still is today, for Woolworth's sporting goods company. For most people associated with the sport, the name is just shortened to Foot Locker or even abbreviated in agate results as FL. The event is the longest-running national cross country race for high school students.
The South Region is made up of states in the southern and southeastern United States including: FL, TX, KY, SC, NC, AL, GA, OK, TN, VA, AR, WV, LA. The South Region event is held at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, North Carolina annually.
About the All-Time
List:
In the long history of the Foot Locker South Regional Championship, the individuals listed below represent the fastest times ever run on the McAlpine Greenway Park 5K Course in Charlotte, NC. Below you will find some of the sport’s greatest cross country runners of all-time from West Virginia. This deep list was compiled using results from the seeded, senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman boy’s races. This is a West Virginia High School Boy’s only list - beginning at 1992 to present.
It's reported that as time has progressed many of the trails on the traditional 5K course have gotten wider from extensive use, which meant that a runner hitting the tangents could get shorter and shorter distances. In response to the gradual drop in distance over the years, McAfee and his fellow coaches decided to add a little extra distance to one of the switchback curves in the portion of the course before the big hill. After repeated measurement and that one adjustment, McAlpine is now back to being a full 5000 meters! In practical terms, that means it currently runs an average of 10-15 seconds slower than in recent years for elite runners under similar conditions. Therefore, future races (beginning in 2015) will be approximately 60-70 meters longer than prior races, but without knowing if EVERY prior year used the exact same course, I have decided to just go with the presented times without any conversion factor.

For the boys, Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown High has the fastest 5K time of 15:04 for all West Virginia high school runners at the Foot Locker South Regional Championship at McAlpine Greenway Park, NC. Pelliccioni was a 2010 FLCCC Finalist, State CC Champ, 2 x WV State CC Runner-up, 2 x Gatorade West Virginia Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, 4-time All-State Selection in cross country, 4-time All-State selection in track.
2. Sub-16:00
Performances:
There have only been a total of twenty-five West Virginia high school runners that have run sub-16:00 at the Foot Locker South Regional. Also, there are only five runners that have gone sub-16:00 two times each, while only one runner has run sub-16 three times.

3. Foot Locker
National Qualifiers:
The following West Virginia high school runners qualified for the Foot Locker National Championship from the Foot Locker South Regional seeded boy’s race.
· Michael Cox (Athens HS) 1992 - Cox went on to place 12th at the Kinney Cross Country Championships with a time of 15:43.50.
· Justin Simpson (Oak Glen HS) 2002 – Simpson went on to place 23rd at the Foot Locker National Championship with a time of 15:40.50.
· Cody Pelliccioni (Morgantown HS) 2010 – Pelliccioni went on to place 36th at the Foot Locker National Championship with a time of 16:00.00.
It should be noted that: Steve Taylor (St. Marys HS) and Brian Redman (Keyser HS) qualified for Kinney Cross Country National Championship in the early 1980's. However, at that time West Virginia was not in the South Region. Taylor and Redman qualified at the Kinney Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, NY.
