Meet: A-AA Boys State Meet Predictions
Location: Cabell Midland High School
Date: To be held October 31, 2009
Predicted A-AA Boys Team Results
This looks like a good matchup between Grafton and Berkeley Springs. Berkeley has been
ranked at the top for most of the season. After the Regional, it was a tie. Grafton
won the Regional meeting handily and did so without one of their front five in the lineup.
Berkeley Springs will need good runs from Cory Yarrington, Corey Shetler, and Gudiel Guzman.
If that happens, they could run away with it. Richwood, Doddridge, Magnolia, and Scott would need
great days and probably need someone to be off for Grafton and Berkeley to be in the hunt.
I have Grafton taking the title by just four points over Berkeley Springs. I have 3rd through
6th separated by just 11 points with 3rd through 5th separated by just thee. No order of finish
among those teams would be a surprise.
1. Grafton 74
2. Berkeley Springs 78
3. Richwood 116
4. Doddridge 118
5. Magnolia 119
6. Scott 127
7. Williamstown 154
8. Oak Hill 176
9. Ravenswood 178
10. Shady Spring 206
Predicted Boys A-AA Top 25
John Mundey started the year at the top of the rankings and has remained there throughout
the season. He has to be considered the solid favorite. He's not unbeatable, but he is
clearly the man to beat. Drew Woodford has been a steady performer and has stepped up well
for the State Meet the last two seasons. Derrick Chaffin is not the next highest ranked, but he
stepped up big last year and performed very well at the Geico Classic. He won't be afraid
to challenge Mundey. Matt Knowlton is vastly improved from last year and should continue a
Ravenswood tradition of top level individual finishes. Riley Freeman has been ranked as high as
3rd and is very dangerous. Jordan Weitzel has beaten Chaffin, Knowlton, and Freeman each at least
once during the season. Rhodes finished 4th last year and historically performs well at the State
Meet. He's actually ranked ahead of Chaffin, Freeman, and Weitzel. Chris Toompas has been very
solid all season and just beat Rhodes at the Regional. Chase Nelson has been on the move late in the
season and beat Knowlton earlier in the season and was right on his heels at the Regional. Perry
has looked very good late with strong runs at the LKC and the Regional meet and ran very well at the
Geico Classic earlier in the year. Jake Wise is actually ranked ahead of Nelson and Perry and has
beaten Freeman and Toompas. Tanner Mattie has also beaten Toompas and has to be considered a threat.
