WVIAC Conference Championships Results
(PIPESTEM, W.Va.)---West Virginia Wesleyan made a sweep of the WVIAC Cross Championships by claiming the men's and women's team titles at Pipestem State Park. Bobcat athletes also took top individual honors as Eric Cooper raced to a nearly two-minute victory in the men's event, while Amanda Griffith won the women's race.
Cooper, a Culloden, WV sophomore, completed the 8K course in 25:56 to finish comfortably ahead of teammate Pat Reagan. Charleston's Corey Mehl placed third. Woody Snoberger finished fourth to give WVWC three of the top four finishers. Michael O'Flaherty was tenth and Justin Coughlin ended up eleventh to round out the scorers for the Bobcats. Scott Bonnette of Wheeling Jesuit, a tenth place finisher, was the top freshman.
Griffith won the third race of her senior season. The Cumberland, MD native's time of 24:28 edged West Liberty freshman Kallen Weaver by six seconds. Amanda Maxwell of Alderson-Broaddus was just behind at 24:38. Sarah Rosier (4th), Jess Barkley (6th), and Allison Teter (8th) gave WVWC three more top ten finishers.
Wesleyan's Jesse Skiles was named Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's sides. The veteran mentor has now led his teams to 38 WVIAC championships in track and cross and country.
Concord, which placed four runners in the top ten, was the runner-up in the men's race. Davis & Elkins was third. Alderson-Broaddus placed second in the women's race, followed by Charleston.
The top ten in each race earned All-WVIAC honors. WVIAC newcomer Seton Hill had individuals grab the first league honors for the Griffins. Julian Florina placed ninth in the men's race, while Laura Lemoine was tenth in the women's race.
